I'll update or rewrite entirely as I play more!Initial impressions are good. If you watched a video you can get the jist of the game and it plays exactly how you'd imagine. You can paint your car which I didn't really see in any videos, so that's cool. Graphics are nice - satisfying explosions, good dust storms, nice landscapes, etc. and there are lots of atmospheric touches (like the retro style loading screen and menu design). Gives you the feel of the original 1988 Dark Future boardgame without the tedium of those vastly dated rules. The writing for missions and emails is surprisingly well done too - they inject some modern ideas without losing the 80s kitsch. The controls here feel smooth and the strategy is enjoyable. I've played the majority of my time without pausing, and honestly I think the game is better for it.POTENTIAL DOWNSIDES:- I've had 6 crashes in 13 hours (so far). Some people reported higher. Most importantly one of those crashes resulted in me losing all my save game progress. Brutal.- Fuel mechanic is a bit strange. You can't do a mission without enough fuel, and it costs more and more money to buy fuel. So it's a complete non-choice that feels petty and annoying. Why not just do lower mission rewards and autobuy fuel or something? Who would willingly lose a run to try to buy a different weapon or something?- I worry about replayability, mainly around enemy cars feeling somewhat same-y. Mission mutators that are unlocked later as well as more characters\/cars to choose from should help I think.- When you enter the slow-pause tactical mode the music quiets down and they play this ominous semi-high pitched whine noise instead. I think to add drama or intensity? All it does is annoy me though, and I find it jarring with the music going from quiet to loud over and over.- On a run once you have a good car and a safe chunk of cash for gas, there is NO motivation to do harder missions. They aren't worth the risk. You can finish a season just breezing through easy stuff mostly. So if you tend to play the most optimized way possible this can be a bit of a downside.. Pretty simple in scope but a lot of fun to play. Pick a goofy 80s character with a unique vehicle, deal with an escalating gas shortage while trying to upgrade your car, complete missions while blasting everything on a variety of maps in between. Along the way unlock more characters, vehicle variants, perks and corporate gear. Good stuff.. 2 hours played including all the first scenario.Like many GW PC adaptations, although the setting and ambience is spot on, the gameplay is repetitive, with very limited vehicle setups. Absent are aspect of the boardgame such as different vehicle types and plenty of options for weapon mounting locations. Equipment via the shop is scarce, I suppose that's trying to fit the post-apocalyptic setting, but one of the things I was looking forward to was designing my vehicle from brakes, tyres and armour types and minutiae of weapon selection, balancing weight and engine with perofrmance. I get little of interest to buy apart from items to make armour or weapons a little better.Roads seem to be always 4 lanes, no way to turn around (not that there's much reason to), no hint of the handling risks or planning your drive from the original. I like that retro font, but the graphics overall are disappointing.Sadly it plays like an 80s joystick arcade game, not a 2019 new development. 6\/10 at best, get it on sale for an evening's play. I'll play more, but after an hour or so it gets dull, fast.Update - also crashed just as I was picking a mission.Update after a couple more hours, some improvements in payouts and equipment available, but no change to gameplay apart from occasional mutators on missions.Further update - after a couple more hours into a run, it says my save is out of date and I have to restart. Great. 3\/10.. It's like a tactical version of road redemption. it's very cool. I for one really enjoy this game. I also like Blasted Road Terror, Death Skid Marks, and Convoy was ok to me. Maybe cause I grew up at a time when Mad Max was popular and I loved all types of Car Combat I am biased toward this. One of my favorite games of all time is Roadwar 2000 (which I would love a remake of) and I didn't get to play it as much as I wanted to, but Autoduel as well. I will admit, this game isn't for everyone. It might not "look" or "sound" like a 2019 game to them, but it's also less than $30 not on sale. The gameplay isn't you driving the car as much as giving orders, so it's more strategic. Be in the right lane, choose the right weapons and such. The game gives me an old school feel and some nostalgia vibes and so far I am really enjoying it.
